Cancer Detection Camp and Awareness Seminar Organized in Thathappilly

Cancer Detection Camp and Awareness Seminar Organized in Thathappilly

A comprehensive cancer detection camp and awareness seminar were organised at the Thathappilly Government High School Hall, spearheaded by the organisation ‘Help for Helpless’ in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) North Paravur and Ernakulam General Hospital. The initiative aimed to address the rising health concerns in the region through expert screenings and educational sessions.
The event was presided over by the organisation’s president, Dr. Manu P. Vishwam, and officially inaugurated by Dr. Sreevilasan K. A., former State President of the IMA. Dr. Jiss Joy, Consultant Oncologist at Sree Narayana Medical College, delivered a keynote message emphasising the importance of early detection.
The educational segment featured detailed sessions by medical experts. Dr. P. C. Sunitha, Gynaecologist at Shreyas Hospital, spoke on the topic "HPV Vaccine: What and Why?", while Dr. Shinto Rajappan, Cancer Specialist at Ernakulam General Hospital, led a session titled "What is Cancer? How to Confront It". Felicitations were offered by Ophthalmologist Dr. M. K. Mohandas and Dr. K. G. Jayan.
Adv. V. D. Satheesan, MLA of Paravur, visited the camp to offer his support. During his address, he assured the public that, based on the findings of this camp and subsequent follow-ups, necessary steps would be taken to identify and mitigate the factors behind the high prevalence of cancer in the locality.
The camp saw an overwhelming response with over 200 participants undergoing screenings. Leaders of the organisation, Dr. Manu P. Vishwam and Dr. K. G. Jayan, noted that according to ICMR data, the Paravur region in Ernakulam district shows a higher rate of cancer patients. They attributed the high turnout to the increasing incidence of the disease in Thathappilly and the growing health consciousness among the residents.
The event saw the participation of several dignitaries, including Kottuvally Panchayat Standing Committee Chairpersons P. S. Shashi and Sunitha Balan, Panchayat member P. M. Manoj, and a team of specialist doctors, including Dr. Paul Antony, Dr. Gopinath K. G., Dr. Prathibha C., Dr. Liba Manoj, Dr. C. J. Joy, and Dr. N. Madhu.
The program commenced with a welcome speech by Unit Secretary Sherly Sadanandan and concluded with a vote of thanks by Vice President Sreedevi Radhakrishnan. The camp was successfully executed under the leadership of Captain M. K. Shashi, Treasurer K. G. Anilkumar, and other unit officials, with the dedicated support of 10 NCC cadets led by teacher V. P. Anupin.
